Exclusive Interview with Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock

Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock played as a centre-back for Millwall, Tottenham, Southampton, Liverpool, West Ham, Crystal Palace, and Swindon Town. These days, he still follows the game closely.

He is also open about what came after. In the interview below, he describes the serious drinking problem he experienced after retiring from football and how he came through it.

That honesty is why we asked him. iGamingCare exists because a bet should stay what Razor says it should be: fun, light, and under your own control. But knowing where that line sits, and having the tools to recognise when gambling is no longer just entertainment, matters.

Football and betting have long been closely connected through sponsorship, advertising, and promotions. But gambling remains a very personal habit. What works for one supporter will not work for the next, and a bet that feels harmless to one person can creep up on another.

In the exclusive interview below, Razor explains why he keeps his stakes low, why chasing losses is a habit to avoid, and why he believes talking about a problem is better than keeping it to yourself.

He also shares six straightforward tips for safer gambling, including setting limits, avoiding chasing losses, choosing licensed operators, and asking for help when you need it.

We would add a couple of practical points of our own.

If you want to put clearer boundaries around your gambling, our guide to deposit and time limits explains how to cap what you spend and how long you spend gambling through your operator’s account settings.

If you feel you need a firmer break, self-exclusion can put a stronger barrier between you and gambling. GAMSTOP blocks access to online gambling websites and apps operated by companies licensed by the UK Gambling Commission, while GAMSTOP Betting Shops provides a separate service for betting shops.

The purpose of either option is simple: to give you more control.

If gambling has stopped feeling like the bit of fun Razor describes, you do not have to sort it out on your own. Free, confidential support is available.

‘Razor’ on His Saturday Accumulator and Life After Football

Do you enjoy a bet and, if so, what on?

Neil Ruddock: My wife and I enjoy watching the horse racing, and I’ll put a pound or two down, but I’m not a big gambler. I love a Saturday accumulator! My wife is actually far better at wagers than I am – she doesn’t even study the form, just picks random selections and wins more than me!

I usually put a fiver on an accumulator backing my former clubs: Millwall, Tottenham, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, and Swindon. Last season they rarely all won on the same weekend, but it’s a fun weekly tradition.

How do you stay in control of your betting?

Neil Ruddock: By keeping stakes low! A fiver is less than the price of a pint these days. If I go to Chester Races with mates in September, I might go up to £20 a race to push the boat out, but I keep it strictly as light entertainment. It’s just a bit of fun.

Betting should be fun, not out of control

You’ve been open about some of your struggles in the past, how important is it to talk about them?

Neil Ruddock: I went through a serious drinking problem after retiring. Transitioning out of football is tough: you go from being surrounded by 40 lads in a dressing room every day having a laugh to suddenly sitting at home with nothing to do. I started heading down the pub and reverted into a teenager, mainly because my actual teenage years were consumed by professional football discipline.

I’m close friends with Paul Merson, who faced similar struggles with gambling and drinking. Fortunately, I managed to come through the other side. Today, I’m in a great place with a wonderful wife, great kids, and five dogs.

Razor’s Tips to Enjoy Safer Gambling

  • Having a bet should be fun and enjoyable, and it should be done around events and sports that you enjoy to watch. Keep it light and only do it if you enjoy it.
  • Chasing bets is a bad habit and shows that you probably shouldn’t be gambling – always know when to call it a day.
  • There’s a load of operators out there these days, and some of them aren’t as legitimate as they seem. If something sounds too good to be true, it normally is. Choose licensed and regulated gambling operators.
  • I enjoy a little flutter because I limit what I spend and when I do it. Having a limit allows you to stay in control.
  • Asking for help is a sign of awareness, not weakness. All problems shared are better than problems kept to yourself. Talking honestly about any problems you may be facing always helps.
  • Balance is key to enjoying having a bet. Always have fun when betting or do it to enhance something like watching the football or the racing, and when it isn’t fun anymore, then stop.

Last Word

Our thanks to Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock for his time and his openness about betting and the importance of staying in control. His message is simple: keep it fun, keep it in check, and know when to stop.
