What Is EGBA?
EGBA is a trade organization that represents online gambling operators licensed in the EU. But what exactly does that entail? In this short video, iGaming.com CEO Prof. Dr. Andreas Ditsche asks Secretary General, Maarten Haijer, to describe the main tasks.
In the video, you will learn what the European Gaming and Betting Association does.
Find out how it works to create a safer, fairer, and more transparent gambling environment across Europe.
The Three Core Priorities at EGBA
In his discussion with Prof. Dr. Ditsche, Maarten Haijer outlines EGBA’s three main tasks:
- European legislation – from anti-money laundering to GDPR and payments, EGBA takes care of legislation on behalf of its members.
- National legislation – the organization supports members with national laws that govern local markets.
- Representation – EGBA shares data, explains safer gambling tools, and engages with policymakers and the public.
The Secretary General notes the growing importance of EGBA’s representation role. This highlights how open dialogue and shared data are crucial to preventing harm and supporting responsible gaming standards across the EU.
“Something that’s become more important in recent years is representation, which means anything to do with explaining to the outside world.”

The organization has been working for years to introduce standardized markers of harm in gambling. The EU recently approved EGBA’s proposed draft, meaning operators across Europe will be better armed to protect players from gambling addiction.
