Casinos are required by regulators to follow strict responsible gambling regulations. However, the general belief is often that they only care about profit and would readily abandon this commitment.

In the short video above, Prof. Dr Andreas Ditsche, CEO of iGaming.com and main contributor to iGamingCare, sits down with Maarten Haijer, the Secretary General of EGBA, to discuss this topic.

Companies Care About Responsible Gambling

Prof. Dr Andreas Ditsche opens the discussion by asking whether casinos are committed to protecting players. Or do they only do what the law requires and care more about profit?

Both he and Haijer agree that while casinos are companies and not public health organizations, they aren’t faking their commitment.

“There’s no business interest in having customers for a short period and then losing them.”

Maarten Haijer Secretary General of EGBA

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) represents online gambling operators like Entain and Flutter Entertainment. It works with institutions in the EU to enhance player protection.

Recently, the EU approved EGBA’s draft for a standard on markers of harm, which will help casinos and regulators prevent addiction more effectively.

The Importance of Responsibility

Maarten Haijer explains why companies care and aren’t just focused on profit. First, having a good relationship with customers and ensuring their safety is good for business. Companies want stable revenue, and that can be achieved by protecting players.

The other remark is that society itself helps keep casinos in check. The public and even employees expect a company to perform well and protect its players. Management is also accountable for the company’s operation and responsible gambling tools.
